Spring 2010 SOS Workshop #1 is DONE!

Yesterday was a bittersweet last session, ending another SOS workshop. I've known most of the animators in that workshop since the AAU days and now after having graduated they are off, applying for jobs and getting awesome offers. I'm really proud of everybody and wish them nothing but the best!

Thanks for all those Tuesdays filled with laughter!!

Noodle Woman - Critique

I'm putting all the feedback posts up on the Spungella Feedback page, so it's more centralized for the Workshop takers. I will still post notices here, but the full text can be found here.
Of course if you prefer to not have your work online, just let me know beforehand.

End of second SOS Workshop!

Last Thursday was the last session of the second Spungella On-Site Workshop! Although the group was smaller than the first one, I sure had as much fun as before. You guys were great and thank you very much for attending those weekly animation meetings!

Joey, thanks for the amazing reference footage! APPROVED!
Josh, thanks for introducing "actually" to my regular conversations. Actually, thanks for NOTHING!!
Ivy, can't wait to see your spaghetti monster thesis fully realized!
Sunny, your martial arts movie recommendation was awesome, seeing how you enjoyed the footage was scary. ;)
Annie, you have some of the weirdest and most creative shot ideas I've seen. So. Awesome.
Dean, thanks for helping out setting up the room and putting it back to what it was, thanks for being patient despite all my notes for your shots and thanks for creeping me out with the shot about the guy and his love for dismembered legs. :)
Bernie, it's always a pleasure to have you show up on Thursday, or Tuesday, or any other day you might show up.

THANKS GUYS!!

Current SOS Workshop Update

As workshop start dates come closer, the inevitable re-shuffling starts, so here's the current information in terms of start dates and how many spots are left. Maximum is 12 animators per workshop.

- updates can be found here.

A location change has also happened. It's about the same distance away from the 180 building of the AAU, still downtown, on 580 California St. For more information and pictures, check out the SOS FAQ.

Spungella Workshop update

Hey everybody,

the 2nd Spring SOS Workshop is starting in a month and the normal reshuffling period starts. Looks like there are now 2 spots free again, but only 1 spot left for the Summer SOS Workshop. And I'm already getting asked about the Fall SOS Workshop!!

As always, for the latest update, check out the "Workshop Dates & Schedules" post on spungellaonsite.blogspot.com

Summer SOS Workshop #1 Sign-up

I'm starting to receive sign-up emails for the Summer SOS Workshop! Fantastic! I'm not sure yet if I will do 7 weeks with one session a week or two sessions a week, but it will be 7 weeks for sure. If it's only one session then the whole thing will cost pretty much half the current price of course.

The workshop will start June 21st. To see how many spots are left, check out this post.

As always, if you got questions, head over to spungellaonsite.blogspot.com and check out the FAQ. If you still have questions, just send me an email.

Cheers

The end of the first SOS Workshop!

Yesterday was the last session of the first Spungella-On-Site Workshop and I wanted to thank every animator who was part of it! Those Tuesday evening were a blast and I had a really fun time every week. You guys are an awesome group and very very talented on so many levels (the 100 frame shots that you guys did were so cool and once everybody is happy with their work I'll post them here for people to see). To finish this off, here a few pictures from their visit at work.

THANK YOU!

SOS Animation Workshop #2 now open!

The current SOS Workshop is so much fun that I've decided to open up a second workshop now instead of next Spring! You can never have enough animation!!

If you're interested then email me using signup(at)spungella.com. Just like the first workshop, there is a maximum of 12 animators who can attend (due to room size and time constraints, there needs to be enough time to talk about your animation).

The second workshop is going to start in about a month, plus/minus a few days depending on how ready the animators are schedule wise (if it fills up quickly we could technically start next week). Same location, either Monday, Thursday or Friday evening, 7 to 10pm.

If you have questions about the SOS Workshop consult the F.A.Q. In case you still have questions, just email me and I'll help as best as I can.

Spungella On-Site Email Instructions for Sign-Up - Update

_________________________________________________________________________

[update:]

Well, this is very weird, looks like people got error messages, but I got all of your emails on that account. Maybe my host had a hiccup and sent out that error? But since so many had problems, what if some didn't go through?

I'm really sorry for that, no idea what happened. I changed the email and tested it, and just like the other one, it works.

In order to keep it fair for everybody, I will cancel this sign-up and re-open it for tomorrow, 12:30pm. Feel free to email me on the new address as a test today.
_________________________________________________________________________

I you plan on emailing me about SOS, then here are the details:

Send an email to: signup (at) spungella.com

The Queen is dead. Long Live the Queen. - repost

For the frequent readers: yes, this is a repost. I deleted this post a few days into it in order to revisit the content. So here we go again. Updates in red.

I just had to write that title for the subject. I watched Elizabeth over the week-end [which is now a few week-ends ago] and I really liked it. Can't wait to watch Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Great performances!

But the more appropriate title for this post would be: The Classes are dead. Long Live the Classes!

That's right, there will be more animation rants, but in a slightly different way. Nothing has been finalized yet [pretty close though], but the current plan is to use a conference room downtown, courtesy of The Resource Corner, LLC, at One Sutter Street, two or three blocks away from the 79 buidling, close to BART, Muni, etc.

The specifics so far are:

  • 16 sessions in Spring & Fall (one session per week)
  • 16 sessions in Summer (two sessions per week)
  • 7 to 10pm
  • 12 animators
  • $740 total per animator (paid in full prior to workshop start)

The course model will be the same I used at the Academy. You can bring in any clip for review during the session and email me during the week for further feedback. Clips can be anything ranging from bouncing balls to short films. You can come in to start with the basics or to do a demo reel review, that's all up to you.

There won't be any grades, no homework, etc. so no "midterm" and "finals" and I won't "fail" you. It's a workshop environment with reviews as well as lectures and spungella.com will serve as an extension to the on-site sessions. If you've attended any of my classes, then you know the drill. I'm here to help, but be ready to get honest (albeit subjective) feedback.

The current start date for this Fall workshop is September 1st and will last until December 15th. The start date is pretty fix, but the end date might change a tiny bit depending on what day class starts. Right now I'm shooting for Tuesday evenings.

Again, I'm still ironing out all the details, but that's the basic idea for now. Once everything is laid out I will post an official announcements [this Monday] with all the gory details and an FAQ.

Sign-up will be on a first come first serve basis via email request on Monday, July 20th 2009, 1pm.

I'd love to get some feedback about all this in the comments section though [which I got already last time (thanks!!), but feel free to add more]. Any questions, ideas, suggestions, I'm open to whatever I can do (within reason) to make this as awesome as it can be.

I'm also looking for a name for this class and despite some ideas, would love to hear your suggestions as well.

This whole endeavour will be called:
  • S.O.S. - as in Spungella On-Site.
Thanks Ting and Bernie for the suggestions! Again, an official site with proper will be out on Monday.

Cheers!
JD
